![]() Master of Malt claims the whisky blend draws “from 5 different types of cask, including American white oak casks, Sherry casks and Mizunara oak casks. Details on Suntory’s site are, aside from suggested tasting notes, on the scarce side for each individual expression in the Hibiki line. Now we’re giving a third expression a look: Hibiki Harmony. Then I got to try Nikka from the Barrel and found myself that much more pensive. Even at the low end, Suntory Whisky Toki made for a more interesting drinking experience than some of the similarly priced (and pricier) scotches I’ve tried. Perhaps the general obscurity and still somewhat underground nature of Japanese whisky is key to my curiosity. In fact, until recently, the actual production of Japanese whisky was moderated to a fairly loose degree. This may surprise those of you who recall my Caribou Crossing and Crown Royal Noble Rye reviews, since the conditions for being labeled Japanese whisky make it seem like an odd cross between scotch and Canadian whisky. I do still try to expand my horizons every so often, and while scotch may be considered the default go-to for exploration, I’ve found more intrigue in the niche subcategory that is Japanese whisky. Yet they make a world of difference for the ever-curious drinker that I am. That may not be surprising, given how copious and relatively affordable options for American whiskey are. It's not THAT scarce.A passing glance at my content is all it takes to see where my whisk(e)y preferences lie. I see it come in my local store quite often at $120 but it just sells out IMMEDIATELY (there is an online listing and it'll show if it came in and sold out.) Costco also has been getting it in at $100. These sell out at $120.people are clearly fine buying it for that price. Springbank is $100 you think that's ever coming down? It's available, I see it around, they won't lower the price though. They now have an inflated mystique and unless they crank out an insane amount and they sit around they'll never be under $100 again. Why would they just lower it? To be nice? No way. And the problem is people KEEP buying at these inflated prices. I get that one reason these are expensive is because of the scarcity but that's not the only reason, the whisky market in general is out of control and getting more expensive every month. I've seen it selling for $80 and the new retail is now $60 when it used to be $30 a year or two ago. Look at Henry McKenna, the prices continue to go up and it's not hard to get or that good. But that doesn't stop places from selling it for more clearly people are paying. Look at Oban 14, places are selling it for $100.it's literally EVERYWHERE. People are used to it so why should they lower the price? Maybe if things sit on the shelf.but they won't. MAYBE that's what logic says.but I doubt it.
